The ISR’s Quality and Safety Alliance (ISRQSA) has launched a Call for Action intended to serve as a set of internationally relevant recommendations and guidelines for medical radiation safety, management and informed use. The ISR and ISRQSA will function as a primary actor and facilitator through this Call for Action.
Multiple imaging examinations and cumulative effective dose are an increasingly topical issue. In their editorial “Looking critically at the paradigm of radiation exposure from multiple imaging examinations” that has just been published in European Radiology, ISRQSA Co-Chairs D. Frush and G. Frija state that imaging decisions need to be based on a benefit-risk approach taking into account the existing principles of justification and optimization.
The ISR is delighted to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) on promoting the safe use of radiation and to enhance cooperation in the promotion of high standards of radiation protection.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the ISR have signed practical arrangements on cooperation in the area of diagnostic and interventional radiology until 2024. The two organizations have thereby elevated their longstanding relations to a formal level. The agreement focuses on promoting global radiological quality and safety, capacity building and education in the field of diagnostic imaging, especially in underserved areas.
The ACR Radiology Leadership Institute and the ISR are collaborating on a leadership program tailored to the practice environments in Sub-Saharan Africa. The virtual program will focus on foundational leadership principles. The pilot program will include radiologists in Zambia, who will participate in on-demand training modules and a hands-on workshop with customized cases. As the program develops, the organizers plan to expand to radiologists in other parts of the world.
The ISR, the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) and the World Health Organization (WHO) held a webinar on Safer Maternal and Newborn Care – the Role of Ultrasound on September 14, chaired by Guy Frija (ISR) and Jacques Abramowicz (WFUMB). The webinar was organised in celebration of World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), which is commemorated annually on 17 September, and offered interesting lectures from high-level speakers. The recording is available now for free.
The ISR-endorsed paper on "How to improve access to medical imaging in low- and middle-income countries" has been published in The Lancet journal EClinicalMedicine.
The ISR-WHO Scientific Symposium on Systematic Screening for TB and the Role of Chest Radiography was a huge success. The WHO presented its updated guidelines for TB screening, which now include recommendations on the use of chest radiography and computer-aided detection (CAD) systems. The more than 460 participants from all over the world included radiologists, pulmonologists, radiographers and other related professions.
The Lancet Oncology Commission on Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine presents results from the first-ever comprehensive effort to quantify imaging and nuclear medicine resources worldwide. It highlights dramatic inequalities in access to these resources and calls for a global strategy to scale up access to imaging and nuclear medicine for cancer patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The ISR is proud and honored to be among the supporting organizations of the Commission.
The ISR paper The use of imaging in COVID-19 -- results of a global survey by the International Society of Radiology. Blažić I et al, European Radiology, 17 September 2020 has been selected as EuroMinnies 2021 winner in the Scientific Paper of the Year category.
