About the Béclère-Fuchs Foundation
The International Society of Radiology Béclère-Fuchs Foundation was established to advance global health by expanding access to safe, high-quality medical imaging in underserved regions. Named in honor of Antoine Béclère, a pioneer in radiology, and Walter Fuchs, a dedicated leader in international radiology collaboration, the Foundation builds on the ISR’s century-long mission to unite radiologists worldwide and promote equitable access to imaging.
Medical imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing and treating diseases like cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Yet, in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), access to these life-saving technologies remains limited due to resource constraints, infrastructure gaps and workforce challenges.
Foundation Core Missions

Advancing Global Health Equity
Bridge the Gap in Imaging Care: Support the ISR’s mission to increase imaging capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), addressing the gaps in imaging care that lead
to delayed diagnoses and higher mortality rates.
Impactful Partnerships: Provide expertise to governmental health organizations like WHO and IAEA, promoting equitable access to medical imaging.

Promoting Quality & Safety in Radiology
Global Leadership: Back the ISR’s initiatives to promote radiological quality and safety
through the ISR Quality and Safety Alliance (ISRQSA), uniting regional and international
efforts (and advising governmental organizations)
Radiation Safety: Enhance safety for patients and healthcare workers particularly in
underserved regions, ensuring imaging care adheres to the highest standards.

Providing Targeted Education
Deliver Education Where It’s Needed: Support providing tailored educational resources and training programs to underserved regions through ISR’s Committee on Radiologic
Education and collaborations with the IAEA, academic institutions, and leading radiology journals.
Workforce Development: Strengthen the radiology workforce in underserved regions by
supporting mentorship programs, on-site training, sponsored participation in international
meetings, and access to high-quality educational resources.

Empowering Innovation & Collaboration
Innovative Tools: Support the development of novel tools such as artificial intelligence algorithms locally tuned for LMICs, enabling access to radiological support for communities in need.
Amplify Local Efforts: Partner with ISR member societies and initiatives to address regional challenges in radiology, developing sustainable infrastructure in LMICs, including point-of-care imaging facilities and technology, that be impactful for generations to come.
"The Béclère-Fuchs Foundation is not just about expanding imaging access. It's also about empowering future leaders in radiology. By supporting scholarships, mentorship programs, and international collaborations, the Foundation is helping develop a sustainable and impactful radiology workforce for years to come.”
Geraldine McGinty, MD MBA FACRChair, ISR Committee on Radiological EducationNew York, USA
"The Béclère-Fuchs Foundation supports a close collaboration between the ISR and the WHO and IAEA to promote safe, effective, and equitable access to medical imaging across the globe. From supporting workforce training to advancing radiation safety standards, these partnerships enable us to turn policy into action, ensuring that medical imaging is both accessible and safe for patients in every healthcare setting.”
Prof. Guy FrijaCo-Chair ISR Quality and Safety AllianceParis, France
"Ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety in medical imaging is at the heart of the Béclère-Fuchs Foundation’s mission. Through support for radiological education, training, and global collaborations, the Foundation helps advance radiation protection, best practices in radiology safety and proper justification of imaging safeguarding patients and healthcare professionals alike.”
Donald Frush, M.D. FACR, FAAP, FSABICo-Chair ISR Quality and Safety AllianceDurham, North Carolina, USA
"By supporting ISR collaborations with the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Béclère-Fuchs Foundation is helping keep radiologists at center of global initiatives to improve imaging access and radiological quality and safety."
Beatriz González Ulloa MDTreasurer, International Society of RadiologyZapopan, Mexico
"Medical imaging is a cornerstone of modern healthcare, yet many regions lack even the most basic radiology services. The Béclère-Fuchs Foundation is driving real change by funding innovative programs that will help improve access to diagnostic imaging, particularly in low- and middle-income countries."
Tarek El-Diasty, MDPast President African Society of RadiologyMansoura, Egypt
"For a century, the International Society of Radiology has been at the forefront of advancing medical imaging. The Béclère-Fuchs Foundation helps the ISR continue this legacy by funding transformative initiatives that improve global radiological education, imaging access in under-served areas, and radiological quality and safety."
Bibb Allen, MD FACRPresident, International Society of RadiologyBirmingham, Alabama, USA
"A world where every patient benefits from timely, high-quality imaging has to be more than just a goal. The Béclère-Fuchs Foundation brings together radiologists, educators, and global health experts to help make this vision a reality."
Prof. Boris BrkljačićPresident-elect, International Society of RadiologyZagreb, Croatia
