 Dr. Sudhir Vinayak Tribute

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Sudhir Vinayak, President-Elect of the International Society of Radiology.

Professor Vinayak was the Chair of the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the Medical College, East Africa and a Consultant Radiologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. He was to be the incoming President of the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB), and as an ambassador for WFUMB, he fostered the ISR’s fruitful relations with the ultrasound community. He was also the current President, Mediterranean and African Society of Ultrasound (MASU).

Dr. Vinayak joined the ISR’s Executive Committee in 2016 as the continental member representing the African Society of Radiology. He was elected to the position of ISR treasurer in 2018, and during his term as ISR Treasurer from November 2018 to March 2023, he demonstrated his deep commitment to the ISR’s mission to promote global radiological quality and safety and to bring high quality radiological education to underserved areas while diligently managing the ISR’s resources and maintaining its low membership fees. After the regular end of term as a Treasurer in March 2023, he was elected ISR’s President-Elect.

He has also served in various capacities for local and regional organizations in including past President of the Kenya Association of Radiologists (KAR), past President of the Kenya Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (KESUMB) and immediate past President, African Society of Radiology (ASR).

Professor Vinayak’s research focus was in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), thyroid and breast imaging and obstetrical imaging, and he has written numerous international guidelines on the use of ultrasound. He was on the editorial board for several journals and authored several chapters for radiology textbooks. He has delivered many lectures and presentations in his areas of expertise to international audiences.

Dr. Vinayak’s intellect, wisdom, and friendship enriched our lives and the work of the ISR in countless ways, and he will be sorely missed.
