The 79th World Health Assembly marked an important milestone for global radiology, with the adoption of two resolutions directly relevant to medical imaging: Strengthening Equitable Access to Diagnostic Imaging Through Teleradiology and Radiation and Health: Strengthening Global Protection, Preparedness and Response.

The teleradiology resolution recognizes diagnostic imaging as an essential health service and builds on the 2025 WHA resolution on strengthening medical imaging capacity. The ISR played an active role in supporting its adoption, coordinating a constituency statement from non-state actors in official relations with WHO. ISR Liaison for Global Imaging Access Prof. Hedvig Hricak also participated in WHA79 discussions and highlighted the need for teleradiology to function as a fully integrated clinical service, supported by appropriate standards, governance, quality assurance, workforce training, and patient safety measures.

The ISR also supported the Radiation and Health resolution by co-organizing a dedicated side-event, emphasizing that expanding access to imaging must go hand in hand with quality and radiation safety. Through the ISR Quality and Safety Alliance (ISRQSA), the ISR continues to work with international partners to advance radiation protection and quality assurance around the world.

With both resolutions now adopted, the focus turns to implementation. The ISR will continue working with WHO, IAEA, member societies, and other global partners to help translate these commitments into practical improvements in access, quality, safety, and patient care.
