Antoine Béclère
The Antoine Béclère Medal was created under ISR Treasurer Dr Jean-François Moreau during a session held in Paris between officers of the ISR and Dr Jean-Victor Raust, Secretary General of the Centre Antoine Béclère. Antoine’s unmarried daughter, Antoinette Béclère, before her death, granted the ISR with a large amount of money in order to give the former ISR Secretary General, Walter Fuchs, the means to develop his projects of African radiologist education. Dr Moreau obtained a general consensus among the ISR Executive Committee for the creation of a new kind of ISR honors in the form of a Béclère Medal as well as a Béclère Lecture and a Fuchs Lecture, in order to perpetuate the memory of both major leaders of international radiology and medical imaging. The honors have been awarded during the biennial International Congress of Radiology since ICR’96 held in Beijing where two main educational leaders, Dr Gerald Hanson of the WHO and Dr Philip Palmer of the UCSF, were elected during an ad hoc committee chaired by Dr Moreau, who was himself honored in 2000 in Bueno s Aires with Dr Ludovico Dalla Palma, Dr Lenny Tan and Dr de Souza Almeida. The first Fuchs Lecture was delivered by Dr Maurice Tubiana, both Past-President of the ISR and President of the Centre Antoine Béclère.
